Welcome to the world of Belitopia. The problem with Science Fiction today is that it represents either a highly Utopian view of the world or it represents a highly Dystopian view of the world.
Either we have a world with transporters and food replicators and perfection, or we have a world after an asteroid strike or perhaps a zombie apocalypse. Either utopia or dystopia.
What I wanted was to represent a science fiction world that was much more realistic. I didn’t want it to be dystopian or utopian. I wanted it to be realistic. I wanted it to be believable.
Not utopia nor dystopia, but believable. Hence, let me present Belitopia.
It is my hope that belitopia will represent a realistic view of the world where things were different that enhance our world. Yes, science fiction, but also science fact. What would the world be like if we had continued funding the manned space program after Apollo? Would we have gone on to Mars? Would we have a colony ship orbiting the earth? What about world hunger? What about world politics?
I plan on presenting an alternate reality for our world, but one that is both believable and reasonable. I hope to take what really happened in the past and, via small and not so small modifications to history, create a new world that could have been. In many cases, perhaps a world that should have been.
That is my plan for Belitopia.
I will be presenting my world of Belitopia in an episodic podcast series. Season 1 will focus on the Space Race. Each episode will focus on a particular topic (such as Apollo+, Apollo Applications Program, the Venus Flyby, Space Station Freedom). The format of the episode will be a presentation of the topic and some background, followed by a documentary from the future, from the year 2040, that looks back on the world of Belitopia as related to the episode’s topic.
I will also include auxiliary content on this website that supports the podcast. I hope to talk in detail, for example, about various missions during the podcast, then have details of the mission available on the website. This is not necessary to enjoy the podcast, but will give you deeper insights into the world I am creating.
And don’t worry, I won’t shy away from politics and other world issues as well…not just space and traditional science fiction. In fact, each episode of Belitopia will include a “This Day in History” segment that talks about the world event on a given day within the world of Belitopia. Pay attention to these, they will give hints to what the future of the podcast will be and how the show will expand in the future.
I hope you enjoy my world view.
